Clock Watchers guide for A10's firing Mavericks, dropping GBUs and Dropping Dumb Munitions in AEYES fantastic A10 pit
The A10 has no radar, therefore all target sighting is visual. The following steps should work on other aircraft that have A-G capabilities, i.e. F117A.
The last section covers the F16 and using the Mavericks with radar.
Mav
1. Select Mav page on SMS
2. You cannot set PWR to ON on this page in the A10 so what do you do, do the next best thing, item 3 below!
3. Select WPN page, should be blank. Select STBY to OPER on this page. It is the same as using PWR ON on the SMS Mav page in the F16.
4. Ensure Mav in BORE (boresight) mode, if not cycle through modes, MFD button 3 I believe.
5. Uncover Mav head, keyboard shortcut "U" Should now see a display of the Mav's head view now of the ground ahead.
6. Do an initial designation, press your "Designate Target" key/button. The border of the Mav View on the WPN page should now have a green border.
7. Slew the Mav around using the cursor keys till you find the target. Select the "FOV" button for magnify mode if required to help you see the target better.
8. When you have your target press your "Designate Target " key/button again. A small box should now appear around your target. If not slew some more, the head may not be pointing at it directly, and then redesignate.
8a. If it is the wrong target press the Return to Search switch/button and reselect your target.
9. Fire when in range.
10. The WPN page will go blank since the picture from the Mav head is lost on launch. If you have anymore Mavs left go through steps 5 to 9 again.
GBU
1. Select GBUs on SMS page, use the hotspots on the MFD if you want to.
2. Use the CNTL page to set arming times as required.
3. Go to the TGP page.
4. Select STBY button to activate TGP, should now see a cross hair surrounded by a "broken box". This box represents the NARO field of view if magnification is used.
5. Arm laser by pressing "Alt" +"L" There should be a small "L" bottom right of the "broken box
6. Select FCR ground mode radar, it does not matter if radar fitted for this step! This and the following proceedures (steps 6-11)allow you to centre the TGP.
7. Select 10 or 20 mile range.
8. Select SP then CZ. This puts you in snowplow mode and centres the cursors. At this point the radar (even though not fitted) is what you want to become the Sensor Of Interest (SOI).
9. Select TGP page and make sure you are flying towards your target area.
10. Select SP on, "AREA" at the bottom of the "broken box" should appear, press CZ then SP to Off. "AREA" should now disappear. The dot should have centralised! (This is because it is was aligning to the SOI, the radar. The radar ceases to be SOI when you deselect SP on the TGP page).
11. Selecting Designate Target "0 on the keypad". Note how you get "AREA" below the "broken box" when you do this.
12. Now slew the cross hairs over the target you want to pulverise and select the Designate Target key/button again. AREA should change to "POINT" If this is the first designate you get AREA, designate again. If there is no POINT lock slew a little more and designate again. The TGP may not have picked up the target.
13. If your target is darker than the surroundings select BHOT (Black Hot), if the target is lighter, select WHOT (White Hot). These are on the left hand side of the TGP screen. It should enable an easier lock on the target.
14. If you designate the wrong target, press the Return to Search key/button so you see AREA displayed on the TGP page again and redesignate the target you want.
15. Fly over the target holding down the pickle key/button until the bomb releases. Watch bomb go BANG!!!!!! Do not manoeuvre too much or you can lose lock!
16. Repeat as necessary from step 1.
17. For magnification of target use the WIDE/NARO/EXP button on the MFD
Dumb and Cluster Munitions
The modes on the SMS screen are:
1. CCRP, I cannot get this to work. One main reason is no radar, but some aircraft (real world) can use this mode if the target is on the waypoint list, but cannot get it to do this. If you chose CCRP it defaults automatically to CCIP.
2. CCIP, this works
3. DTOS, this works
4. LADD, no idea about this one?
5. MAN, this works
For all bomb modes using Cluster, Retarded and Free Fall, do the following.
A. Enter A-G mode
B. Enter SMS page, select bomb to be dropped.
C. Set ripple interval, pair/single, arming delay (and burst altitude if Cluster Munitions) as required.
D. CCIP mode
D1. Select CCIP mode on the SMS page. You should see a bomb fall line (BFL) and the delay cue (DC). The piper may be below the HUD view, if this is so you may have to dive until you can place this on the target.
D2. When the piper is on the target, pickle you weapon. Keep the Pickle key/button pressed until the weapon is released.
D3. If you are waiting for release you can initiate a shallow climb, but ensure you keep the bomb fall line vertical or the bomb will miss.
D4. Make sure you dont get caught in the blast radius of your weapon.
E. DTOS mode
E1. Select DTOS mode on the SMS page. You should see a bomb fall line (BFL) and the delay cue (DC). You will also see a small box around your FPM. Lets call this the DTOS Designation Box (DDB)
E2. If the delay cue goes past the Flight Path Marker (FPM) you will not be able to drop your bomb on target.
E3. Fly the aircraft in the direction of the target and slew the DDB onto your target. press your Designate Target key/button. The DDB should now stay on the target. Get back to a safe flight attitude, i.e. wings level or in a slight climb. Note: during DTOS the DDB may move as you level out after designating the target, of it does, cancel the designation and redesignate further in front of the target. If you get it right as you pull back up to level flight the DDB will move onto the target
E4. Make sure you keep the bomb fall line vertical and through the centre of the DDB.
E5. As the delay cue gets closer to the FPM press and hold your pickle key/button. You can either initiate a climb, no more than 3G and 25 degrees pitch, maintain level flight or a slow climb. You must ensure the bomb fall line is vertical though. Keep the Pickle key/button pressed until the weapon is released.
E5. Make sure you dont get caught in the blast radius of your weapon.
E6. The DDB remains locked until you cancel Designate Target. You will have to cancel it if you want to bomb something else.
F. MAN mode
F1. Still working on this in the A10! Need more info on the MILS settings for this.
I will be amending this as I learn more about bombing in the A10 or some kind soul gives me some info.
Hope this helps. I will and cannot be responsible for bombs or Mavericks that hit the wrong targets
As an added extra:
Ground Radar equiped aircraft launch for Mavericks (F16)
1. Select GMT radar mode and required distance.
2. Select Mav page on SMS
3. PWR to ON
4. Select WPN page, should be blank
5. Ensure Mav in PRE mode, if not cycle through modes (BORE, etc).
6. Uncover Mav head, keyboard shortcut "U" Should now see a display of the Mav's head view of the ground ahead.
7. Do an initial designation on the GMT page by moving your radar cursor over the target area, press your "target designate" key/button. You should get a diamond over the target on the GMT page and the border of the Mav view on the WPN page should now have a green border. Note how this is different from BORE mode initial designate above. If you get this wrong go back to beginning of step 7 If you get it wrong press your Return to Search button/key
8. Slew the Mav around using the cursor keys till you find the target. Select the FOV button for magnify mode if required to help see the target better.
9. When you have your target press your "target designate" key/button again. A small box should now appear around your target. If not slew some more, the head may not be pointing at it directly and redesignate.
10. Fire when in range.
11. The WPN page will go blank since the picture from the Mav head is lost on launch. If you have anymore Mavs left go through steps 6 to 10 again.

V1
Version change:
Amended GBU methods so it is clearer, hopefully
V2
Version change:
Amended GBU methods for aligning TGP to forward view, much easier now
V3.
Altered CCIP mode instructions regarding delay cue.
Altered DTOS E3 with regards to DDB slewing.
Bug? Sometimes the DTOS DDB just falls down the bomb line, entering WPN mode and then back to SMS or cycling steerpoints seemed to correct this. Have not seen it happen since.
V4.
Put all the weapon methods in one post to keep it together. Corrected some grammatical mistakes, must learn to speak my native tongue
