We had a chance to sit down with Dale Earnhardt Junior following his first VRW race last monday night in the VRW Talladega 300. This was Dale's third visit to a VRW event, but his first as a guest driver in this league. We asked him about his race, his thoughts about the league, and what his plans were following the experience. Here is what Junior got for us:
Gilles: Dale, Last night at Tally was your first start as a driver in VRW, can you share with us your impressions ?
Obviously you came with little practice with this setup compared to the rest of the field, at least for qualifying. Was it a surprise to end-up 25th in qualify ?
DALE JR] My impressions on the league were great. I got a feeling midway through the race that this was more than I expected.
The competition is tough and yet it was easy to race through the field if you made the right decisions. I didnt expect to qualify 25th though .
I thought for sure I was going to struggle with keeping the draft for a bit, but with that starting spot solid in the field, I was more confident that I could run well in the race.
Gilles: It was a pretty tough race, mostly single line. Still, you've managed to move up pretty fast. How was it from your seat ?
[DALE JR] I found some people early in the race that worked well with me like TJ Majors and Shawn Wise... Me and TJ were on two computers in the same room so that helped us out a lot. I also gained some spots through pit strategy, getting two tires a few times, and gas only once. Also with the most of the guys not willing to step out of line, I took advantage of a few runs on the outside that payed off ! [Note from the editor: Yes, this is exactly how you got me entering turn 3...lol]
Gilles: Did you like what you saw, and how do you think this compares to a real Cup race at Tally in terms of driving, passing, give and take, race strategies ?
[DALE JR] The racing was quite a bit the same as what you would see in Winston Cup. The only thing that I saw with VRW is that the teammates worked together almost religiously ! In Winston Cup, we only work with teammates if they are there at the end of the race, and up until the end you do what you can to get there on your own merit. Also, I would look for more passing and two wide racing in the future at the restrictor plate races on VRW.
Gilles: Speaking of team strategies, you're right they played a major role last night. On your end, you had no real team mate for this one... did you manage to get some help (aside from TJ) or did you feel "singled-out" ?
[DALE JR] I felt like most guys worked with me during the race. But I ran up on several teammates running together at the end that were near impossible to get by ! That spoiled a good finish for me, and at that point I felt like an independant out there...
Gilles: What do you think of the Virtual Racing League, the owner / driver and virtual money concepts ? And what did you think of the race broadcast on PalTalk ?
[DALE JR] The core idea of driver/owner and virtual money is perfect. I am sure it will need some adjustments down the road but the main concept insures a level playing field. The broadcast are great and having watched a few events made me aware of the drivers and their driving styles quickly.
Gilles: We heard you might want to be a part of this next season ? Rumor or a real possibility ?
[DALE JR] I am really looking forward to next season and competing as much as possible. There may be a few schedule conflicts here and there that may make it difficult to run as much as I like, but I definitely have made a commitment to myself to race in VRW. Hopefully I can make another race this season, we will see how that works out.
Gilles: We thank you for you time. Showing up for the post race interviews on PalTalk was a class act ! Good luck for the 2002 season in Winston Cup man, I'm sure most VRW drivers and owners will pull for you all year !
[DALE JR] I want to thank you guys for allowing me to run. Good luck for the rest of the season to all of you.
